Shopify Theme Development
Your designers create the vision. We turn it into a working Shopify theme — built on Liquid, sections, and templates, and delivered under your agency's workflow.
What This Involves
Shopify theme development is fundamentally different from building a generic website. Themes are built in Liquid (Shopify's templating language), structured around sections and blocks so merchants can rearrange and edit content from the theme editor, and organized into templates for each page type (product, collection, cart, etc.). A theme also has to account for Shopify's data model — how products, variants, collections, and metafields actually flow into the templates — which is different from a standard CMS.
For agencies, the most common entry point is a Figma-to-Shopify build: a designer hands off a finished visual design, and it needs to become a real, editable Shopify theme. That handoff works best when the design already accounts for Shopify's section-based structure (repeatable content blocks, not one-off pixel-perfect layouts that don't map to reusable components) — something we flag early rather than discovering mid-build.
Theme Architecture & Customization Workflow
Our typical workflow: review the design and any existing theme, plan out the sections/templates needed (and which can reuse existing ones vs. need to be built new), build and test in a development theme (never the live one), then hand off for staging QA before anything is published.
Customization work — adjusting an existing theme rather than building new — follows the same principle: changes happen in a duplicate/development theme first, so the live storefront is never at risk during development.
Responsive Behavior & Theme QA
Every section is checked across desktop, tablet, and mobile as part of the build. Before anything ships, we check that existing apps still work correctly with the new or modified theme (app-injected scripts and sections are a common source of conflicts), verify page speed hasn't regressed, and test the actual checkout and cart flow — not just the visual pages.
What to Check Before You Brief Us
- Do you have a Figma file (or other design reference), or is this a customization of an existing theme?
- What apps are currently installed that the new theme needs to keep working with?
- Is there a specific launch date, or flexibility to test thoroughly first?
- Not sure whether this is a theme job or something bigger? Try the free feasibility check.
For work that goes beyond what a theme can do — custom logic, external data, or a standalone interface — see Shopify App Development or Shopify Customization. Ready to send over a specific project? Submit it for review.
